Valley Forge Military Academy & College regularly acknowledges and awards the achievements of the individuals who comprise the Corps of Cadets. These awards are given for achievement in academics and leadership to those who exemplify the spirit of the Corps. The names of the honored cadets for the 2010- 2011 school year can be found by selecting the links below.

 

 

Col. Merrow E. Sorley Academic Medals

Presented annually to those cadets of the Freshman and Sophomore Classes of the College with satisfactory academic and tactical records who have achieved distinction in each of the following areas: Foreign Language, Science, Business Administration, Social Science, Criminal Justice, Mathematics and English. Established in memory of Colonel Merrow F. Sorley, Assistant Professor of Physical Science.

The awards for 2010-11 will be named at the College Academic Awards Ceremony on Friday, 20 May 2011.

President's Award

THE PRESIDENT’S AWARD: The President’s Award is presented to the most outstanding new cadet in each company of the Corps of Cadets. The award is based on academic and disciplinary proficiency, esprit de corps, loyalty and identification with the philosophy of Valley Forge Military Academy & College during the period 1 October 2010 – 10 April 2011. Winners of the award will receive an additional day of leave as prescribed by the President, VFMA&C.

Class of 1947 Medal  

 

CLASS OF 1947 MEDAL: The Class of 1947 Medal is awarded annually in memory of the six members of the Class of 1947 who died in service of their country: Private First Class Junius B. Angelli, U.S. Army; Lieutenant Commander William T. Harvey, U.S. Navy, First Lieutenant Je Mickey Helt, U.S. Army; Lieutenant Arthur H. Moore, U.S. Navy; First Lieutenant Myron George Reed, II, U.S. Air Force; and Corporal Clifford David Strout, Jr., U.S. Army. The Class of 1947 Medal is to be awarded to those individuals who best exemplify nobility of spirit, richness of character and remarkable performance in “the service of others” - a man who selflessly devotes his time and energy to help his fellow man in the best American Tradition of “Friendship, Camaraderie, and Loyalty.”

Karl R. Brunner Leadership Award

THE KARL R. BRUNNER LEADERSHIP AWARD: Presented annually by Lieutenant Colonel Richard Brunner in memory of his father, Karl R. Brunner, Cadet First Captain, Class of 1931, to that Cadet that demonstrates the highest degree of inspirational leadership within the Corps of Cadets. The award consists of a framed certificate and a monetary award of $200.

The Harry M. ('67) and H. Michael '88/'90C Judge E Battery Award

THE HARRY M. ’67 AND H. MICHAEL ’88, ’90C JUDGE E BATTERY AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE: Honorary medal presented annually to an E Battery cadet selected by his fellow E Battery Cadets, Tactical Officers, and Commandant, who best represents the five cornerstones which are the foundation of the character based education of Valley Forge Military Academy.

The Sons of the American Revolution Medal

THE SONS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION MEDAL: Presented annually by the Philadelphia Continental Chapter to a Senior ROTC MS I or MS II cadet who has shown a high degree of merit with respect to leadership, soldierly bearing, and all around excellence in the Army ROTC program of studies or activities.

The Department of the Army Superior Cadet Decoration Award

THE DEPARTMENT OF THE ARMY SUPERIOR CADET DECORATION AWARD (SROTC): Presented by the Department of the Army to the outstanding cadet in each class of the Senior ROTC Program. Cadets must be in the top 25 percent in SROTC and academic standing. Selection is based on demonstrated officer potential.

The McCloskey Medal
 

THE McCLOSKEY MEDAL: Presented annually in memory of Lieutenant John D. McCloskey, United States Army Air Force, Cadet Regimental Commander 1936, killed in action 30 June 1943, to those cadets of the College Freshman and Sophomore Classes, First, Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Classes of the Academy who, in the opinion of a designated board, have attained the highest disciplinary reputation in their respective class.

The Stone Medal
 

THE STONE MEDAL: Presented annually in memory of Captain J. Donald Stone, Armor, United States Army, Cadet Captain, Class of 1938, killed in action 1944, to those cadets who have maintained a high average in each class of the Senior ROTC Program. The cadets must have maintained a high degree of esprit de corps and indicated an unusual aptitude for military service.
