Obtaining Academic Accommodations

Valley Forge Military College is committed to ensuring that all qualified students with disabilities have equal access to educational opportunities. In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, an individual with a disability is defined as a person who “has a physical or mental impairment which substantially limits one or more major life activities of such an individual; has a record of such impairment; or is regarded as having impairment.”

Students who have learning disabilities and who are seeking accommodations must complete an application process and be approved before they can begin receiving accommodations. This process includes the student’s self-disclosure, submission and review of documentation, eligibility determination, creation of an accommodation or “504” plan, faculty notification, and implementation.

As this is a time-consuming process, students seeking accommodations are encouraged to contact the LASC Director before the start of the academic year, or as soon after the start of the semester as possible.

Eligibility Determination

The criteria for eligibility at the college level are different from those at the primary and secondary levels, so students who have had a prior “IEP” or “504 Plan” are not automatically eligible for accommodations at the post-secondary level. To receive academic accommodations, a student must provide a diagnostic evaluation which documents the nature and functional limitations of the disability as well as recommendations for specific accommodations.
