What is the PA Legislative Appointment Initiative?

The Pennsylvania Legislative Appointment Initiative (LAI) currently allows each of Pennsylvania’s 203 Representatives, and 50 Senators, to appoint a student from their district as the Commonwealth Scholar for guaranteed admission and a guaranteed partial scholarship to Valley Forge Military College – The Military College of Pennsylvania™. In addition, non-selected applicants may be eligible to receive a legislative scholarship in an open contiguous district. A student awarded the Legislative Appointment Initiative Scholarship may receive the award for up to two years.

Am I eligible to apply?

The Legislative Scholarship is only available to Pennsylvania residents only at Valley Forge Military College, The Military College of Pennsylvania™. The minimum academic requirements are a cumulative high school GPA of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale) and a combined verbal and math SAT score of 1000 (or an ACT score of 20).

You can apply directly through your local state representative’s or senator’s office or you can apply for the program by applying first to Valley Forge. (Valley Forge will forward your application to your state Representative or Senator for consideration.)

When can I apply?

You can apply at any time during the fall of your senior year until February 15th for the following fall.

What does the application process entail?

The basic application is a simple four page document which can be easily completed. You can get your application from your Representative or Senator or from the Valley Forge Military College. In addition to the basic application, each selection committee may require additional information to make their selection.

What is the award amount?

The full amount awarded depends upon the academic achievement of the student selected. The minimum annual award is $12,000 for a high school GPA of 2.5, rising to an annual award of $17,500 for a high school GPA of 3.75.

How can I find out who my legislators are?

You can find out who your legislators are by visiting http://www.legis.state.pa.us/, you can search by address, county or zip code. You can also call the Valley Forge Military College LAI coordinator George Anderson at 610-989-1302 and he will assist.
